Why do we associate particular ways of talking, dressing, styling hair, etc with an ethinic group?

A "Stop the Hate" chapter at my University is getting heat because they are calling their current project, "I Ain't No Hater". Many (white) students and faculty have claimed that people will be turned-off by a "such a blatantly offensive ebonics term". I am trying to argue that, if that is true, they are making the very assumptions that the organization is fighting against -- and that this fact should be used as a tool to expand on the project and have that very discussion. Any ammo for me?

I agree that people will be turned off. Personally, I think that I would be turned off by it. No offense, but it sounds really ignorant and reinforces the negative stereotypes that are associated with black people. Which is probably why the white faculty and students called it a "blatantly offensive ebonics term".

Actually i agree with both sides. But the word Aint sounds so uneducated. And it should be used.Hater is a new word so some people might not understand it.

Well, many people still use the word ain't a lot, so I don't see how that word could be offensive. Maybe use that fact as a good defense to discuss.

At the end of the day, the name of the current project really isn't too important. Regardless of what you call it, the title won't be remembered in a few years.

Consider letting it go so the group's energy can focus more on the project goals.

The people who dress in their cultural dress, specifically advertise their ethnic background. You see a man in orange robe no hat or shoes your not going to say look an Irishman.

It would be best if everyone went nude whenever possible. That way the only distinction would be color.

Do they make a burka in a parka style?
